Clark Selk - Wood Carver

Clark was born in Pincher Creek, Alberta and currently resides in Milk River, Alberta where he has been wood carving since 1993. It was in that year he had just quit smoking and he found he needed “something to do with [his] hands”, or as Clark puts it, he had STOPPED smoking, as QUIT would imply he would NEVER start again, which by the way he has not.

To busy his mind and hands during that trying period he began his art of creating basic wood caricatures. He has developed this work to the masterpieces he creates today which he describes as a “comical side of realism”. Clark’s work continues to evolve as he has consistently been improving the detail and quality of his caricatures to the art you now see available for sale on AlbertaArtists.com. He still is refining his art and learning from his peers as he keeps in constant communication with many other woodcarvers. Annually attending the week long Missoula Wood Carving Seminar at the University of Montana and teaching courses are examples of how Clark continues to interact with other artists.

The ability to create detail is the difference between a novice craftsman and the practised, learned professional. Clark, an accomplished carver, uses basswood (also called linden) to hold details, as it is a hardwood that has little grain pattern and captures even the tiniest feature. Much of his time is spent perfecting the minute detail in these extremely unique creations.

He spends an average of 75 hours to carve a one figure caricature. Clark may be available to create some custom caricature orders for AlbertaArtist.com customers depending on time available and other commitments. If you have a specific idea you would like to see created, let us know via the “Contact Us” option at this site.
